Last Chance

2022

Last Chance is about directing materials away from the landfill and creating furniture from them. It is about hindering myself from using any virgin materials as much as possible, harnessing the energy within them, spent in a previous lifetime, to create something new. All new energy spent to create something new is to be brought onto myself instead of onto manufacturing and waste streams.

In this project I have taken all processes into my own hands and found a way to do it myself when given a “No”. The making of this coffee table has allowed me to understand how New York City works normally hidden to the public eye. By tapping into the underground secondhand material market, I have found valuable material and gone to places I normally wouldn’t go. I have tried to use as much of the material as possible to make sure nothing goes to waste. This coffee table encapsulates information about material and furniture waste, about New York City, and about myself as a designer.

Process Work

This project has been about more than just creating a piece of furniture. Most of my time was spent exploring the city, scavenging for valuable materials to recover, and transporting them to the studio either using the subway or balancing a pile of lumber on a Citi bike for 20 blocks.
